Husbands can make Mother's Day special for their wives by celebrating motherhood with sweet gestures and helping the kids create a special day.

For every man who feels he shouldn’t have to buy a Mother’s Day present for his wife because “she’s not my mother,” there is a woman who believes that every mother should be celebrated on Mother’s Day. Husbands can find a common ground and avoid hurt feelings by helping the children to celebrate their mother and making Mother’s Day special for their wives.

Mother’s Day Ideas include Breakfast in Bed

One of the best ways to celebrate Mother’s Day is to give her breakfast in bed. This sets the tone for the entire day and lets a wife know that her husband has remembered Mother’s Day. Husbands can get up at their regular time and start breakfast instead of sleeping in on Mother’s Day.

Ideally, breakfast in bed should be planned in advance to make sure the ingredients are available. Gather the ingredients, set out cooking bowls and decide which tasks the children can do. Whether breakfast includes a simple meal of toast and eggs or fancier fare, the breakfast should be prepared with the kids’ help.

Keep her out of the kitchen by bringing her a cup of coffee or tea in bed to start the morning and send the children in to snuggle once their part of the breakfast preparation is done. If a breakfast tray isn’t available, use a clean, rimmed cookie sheet with a placemat or pretty towel on it to carry in the breakfast.

Help Children with Mother’s Day Cards

Even though husbands don’t have to buy cards for their wives for Mother’s Day unless they choose to do so, they should assist children in either making or buying Mother’s Day cards. Let children pick the card at the store or set them up with a piece of construction paper folded in half and some markers. Store-bought cards should be selected in advance, but if time has slipped away, assist the children in making cards while mom is in the shower or resting in bed.

Choose a Mother’s Day Present

A Mother’s Day present from the children, while not required, can really make a woman feel special on Mother’s Day. Husbands should help the children decide what they would like to buy or make for their mother. A Mother’s Day present can be as simple as having the children draw a picture of their family, Mother’s Day flowers or something much more elaborate. Let the children have as much say as possible, even if that means letting them choose something at the dollar store.

Flowers for Mother’s Day are very popular. Purchasing a bouquet of Mother’s Day flowers the night before can make the breakfast in bed more special. Let children choose one flower from the bouquet and place it on the breakfast tray. Save the rest of the bouquet for later in the day. Or order flowers to be delivered in advance so the day is not forgotten. Gift ideas for mom from the kids can be big or small, but it really is the thought that counts on Mother’s Day.

Grill a Special Dinner as a Mother’s Day Present

Nothing is better after a nice day with family than a dinner with minimal clean up. Husbands can end Mother’s Day on a high note by grilling dinner for the family. Keep the menu simple enough for the children to help with the side items or with setting the table, and let Mom put her feet up after dinner. She will appreciate the effort and feel loved and special on a day that she feels celebrates all mothers.

On Mother’s Day it is the husband’s job to coordinate the details for the children to celebrate their mother and to supervise while the children do as much of the work as is age-appropriate. Husbands should assist children in choosing or making a card or gift. They should have breakfast ingredients available to make breakfast in bed and order Mother’s Day flowers from the children. Ending the day with a special dinner cooked on the grill to avoid a big clean up can be a great Mother’s Day present.
